Palo Alto Southgate Remodel

Palo Alto, CA

Originally built in 1974, the 4 bedroom/3 bathroom property is located in the central Palo Alto neighborhood of Southgate. The new owners approached Studio-AMA to help them refresh the dark and dated interiors before moving in with their young daughter. The project scope included a complete remodel of the kitchen and two of the three bathrooms. The entryway, living room, dining room, common hallways, and bedrooms were all upgraded with new flooring, paint, trim, doors, hardware and electrical fixtures.

Dining Room/Kitchen

The most significant architectural move of the remodel was removing a large portion of the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The existing space already benefitted from high ceilings, so we celebrated this feature by opening up the space, smoothing out and painting the walls and ceiling, bleaching the wood beams and adding light oak engineered wood flooring that seamlessly connects the dining room to the kitchen. The kitchen was modernized with new pale blue transitional shaker cabinets, brass hardware, Dekton countertops and clear glass decorative lighting fixtures.

Living Room

The living room also felt dark despite its high ceilings and sliding glass door to the backyard. Instead of being an afterthought, we made the fireplace the focal point of the room, with a new custom mantlepiece and built-in side cabinets. A new bronze Pottery Barn Remington chandelier is aligned on the axis with the fireplace. Ceiling-mounted track lighting ensures ample light in the space during non-daylight hours.

Downstairs Bathroom

Because there is no access to natural light in the bathroom, we brightened it up using natural white Bianco Bello marble floor and shower tile. The tub transformed into a luxurious walk-in shower, and the single vanity was replaced by a Pottery Barn Manzanita double sink vanity with a custom marble countertop.

Upstairs Bathroom

The upstairs bathroom was completely overhauled with a new tub, vanity and brass plumbing fixtures. The bright white Thassos marble shower tile complements the custom wall covering by Fayce Textiles and black accents in the mirror and shower curtain rod.
